The Icarus Terms of Reference [1] specify that the design must use &#8220;current or near future technology&#8221;, and that the propulsion must be &#8220;mainly fusion based&#8221;. The latter allows room for a propulsion system that uses hybrid fission-fusion technology. This paper explains the motivation and science behind hybrid fuel and examines the applicability of this technology to deep space propulsion.
