Abstract:

The medical results of long-duration manned space flights and studies on prolonged bed rest as well as laboratory and microgravity experiments using rats have revealed a distinct family of adverse physiological symptoms of greatest concern are those symptoms exhibiting cumulative progression in the absence of treatment and preventive measures, namely muscle atrophy, cardiovascular deconditioning and bone demineralisation. The symptoms relating to bone composition and structure do not appear to be fully reversible and cascading side effects of these and other symptoms such as diuresis and an increased risk of heterotopic calcification and kidney stones arising from increased blood calcium levels are also possible.
