Abstract:

FOR MANY YEARS NOW it has been a common practice of science fiction authors to have their advanced beings casually refer to some form of classification of the cultures generated by intelligent species, one recent example being A. C. Clarke in Fountains of Paradise. With the current level of interest in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligences and the questions posed by it in the scientific community, it may be time to make the first serious approaches to constructing a classification of the forms that an extraterrestrial culture might take.
