Abstract:

The life-saving rockets developed by Henry Trengrouse prompted Congreve to develop his own design [ 1]. The system was fully described in a pamphlet published in 1825 [2]. In applying his rockets to saving life at sea, Congreve’s aim was to save the crew or a shipwrecked vessel “without assistance from the shore”. He proposed to do this by modifying his standard design or 32 or 12-pounder war rocket to produce a line-carrying rocket capable of firmly anchoring itself to the shore.
