Abstract:

12:01 AM LOCAL MARS LANDER TIME: The four planetary explorers in the landing party are sleeping particularly soundly because of the strenuous physical activity outside the lander the previous day and the knowledge that tomorrow will bring yet more EVA* in preparation for the upcoming rover sortie. The crew are a skilfully blended combination of diverse professional capabilities and backgrounds, satisfying both the technical needs for proficiency and political requirements for broad-based representation. During the year since leaving Earth, they have become the proxies for one another’s family and friends. Most importantly, they are a team, united in spirit, in purpose and in dedication.
