Abstract:

The balloon is surely one of the most peculiar types of satellites ever launched into space, and partly for that reason it came to the attention of the public during the early 1960s when the Echo satellites were sent into orbit. Because they were made of highly reflective material, both Echos were easily seen as bright points of light tracking against the dark night sky, resulting in more people seeing this kind of space-vehicle than any other.
