Abstract:
NEARLY T HIRTY YEARS AGO von Braun published the first detailed engineering study for a manned mission to Mars in his book Das Marsprojekt [1]. It was an ambitious undertaking, involving no less than ten ships and 70 men on a three year round-trip to our neighbour planet. The vehicles would have been assembled in orbit from no less than 950 ferry flights by a giant three-stage rocket.
