Abstract:

IN MY ARTICLE [1] I argued in favour of a perceptual theory of intelligence and contrasted this with the computer metaphor of intelligence. I was thus contrasting a theory with a metaphor. I also showed how the latter has given rise to an unmitigated and unquestioned anthropomorphisation of the computer, with the serious linguistic abuse this entails, the scientifically dubious emphasis upon apparent similarities, and the lack of any attempts to demonstrate that similar underlying mechanisms are operative within the brain and the computer.
