Abstract:
Scientific and remote sensing satellite payloads have become increasingly sophisticated over recent years. Payloads (sensors) such as multi-spectral scanners (e.g. Landsat) or synthetic aperture radars (e.g. ERS) generate large volumes of data which, after limited preprocessing, is transmitted to ground stations for further processing and exploitation. The trend is towards wideband payloads which may require data links at rates of several hundred megabits per second (Mbps). The integration of several payloads on the same platform or, alternatively, multi-functional operational modes of a single payload, also add the requirement to provide multi-rate capability to the data link.
