Abstract:

Multi-spectral sensors on-board remote sensing satellites generate enormous amounts of data. The data rate can reach up to 100 Mbits/s. In order to be able to receive this in standard ground stations the data rate has to be reduced, preferably without losing information. This data compression has to be performed on-board the satellite in real time, allowing continuous imaging. A high compression ratio with good image reconstruction quality is required.
