Abstract:

Missions into near interstellar space have been under study for the past 30 years. Those early studies did not focus on the power and propulsion modules of the spacecraft but rather on the scientific objectives of the mission. This paper deals mostly with the ion thruster requirements for achieving the very high velocity increment necessary for a reasonable flight time to the LISM.
