Abstract:

For the United States, the launching of Sputnik 1 was among the most agonizing events of the 20th century. Now, over two decades later, it is clear that the humiliation of Sputnik was the key event for the U.S. space effort. It galvanized the U.S. into action and filled its space programme with purpose. It would give birth to NASA and open the eyes of the government, the public, the press and the military to the possibilities that awaited beyond the atmosphere. All of this is traceable to a time when, in a way few expected, the space age began.
