Abstract:

THE AVAILABILITY OF ARIANE and the Shuttle is the prerequisite for the next decade of European space activities. Ariane will not only increase the capabilities for future application satellites for communication and remote sensing (as well as scientific missions), but it will also allow the step to be made into commercialisation of European communication satellite technology. The increased transport capability of the Shuttle (in size rather than weight) and its reentry capability in connection with the utilisation of Spacelab offers new unique opportunities for experimentation in space by providing a long-duration microgravity environment and by allowing the closer involvement of Man in space experiments and operations.
