Abstract:

On 10 December 1963 in the Cold War climate of political and military uncertainties between the perceived Soviet threat and America’s capabilities in space, President Johnson cancelled Dyna-Soar, a military forerunner to the space shuttle. A reusable mini-shuttle, Dyna-Soar (An acronym for Dynamic Soaring) incorporated hypersonic technology for re-entry after attaining orbit with an expendable booster.
