Abstract:

A small pre-cooling heat exchanger has been built using 0.38 mm diameter stainless steel tubes. The experimental pre-cooler was called the JMHX. It used 100 K high pressure nitrogen or helium gas within the tubes to cool 1000 K nitrogen gas. This simulated high supersonic intake conditions. The operation of the unit reflected the operation of a larger helium pre-cooler for an air-breathing rocket engine applicable to Single-Stage-to-Orbit concepts.
