Abstract:

The UK Schmidt telescope sited in Australia has completed a deep blue photographic survey of the southern sky. Each photograph covers a region of sky 6 degrees square and contains objects as faint as magnitude B=23. The total information content of one Schmidt photograph is 1011 bits. Clearly, if we are to extract the relevant information off one photograph a large amount of data compression is required.
