Abstract:

During the ten years since the successful completion of the Mars Viking mission, no subject has received more attention and speculation than orbiter imagery of a curious two-kilometre-wide mesa that, to most observers, resembles a human face. Thus far, four books have focused on this and other unusual Martian features in the Cydonia region, as well as a score of newspaper, magazine and other media presentations. Strongly conflicting views have emerged, ranging from the extremes that intelligent intervention must have created or modified these objects to the more traditional belief that the objects are completely natural. The latter is the view espoused by most planetary scientists. Geologists point out that the Cydonia region contains thousands of mesas, some of which are bound to appear facelike.
