Abstract:

The use of direct thrust antimatter rocket engines for space propulsion has been well covered by Massier, Morgan, Forward, Cassenti, Vulpetti, Borowski, and others. The 1982 Interstellar Studies issue of JBIS in which reference [3] is found is an important historical document in this regard This paper looks at the use of electrical energy derived from an antimatter energized power generation system to power an electric propulsion system for near and far term missions beyond the solar system. It is intended as a general overview, characterizing the technologies parametrically, without going into great detail on the engineering feasibility. As more difficult missions are considered, the technologies considered are increasingly aggressive with respect to current art.
