Abstract:
Satellite systems for communication to mobile units are in service today. An example is INMARSAT, the International Maritime Satellite Organization which provides operational services to maritime users. Briefly explained, such a system connects the mobile terminal to a public PTT network via a satellite link. Fig. 1 shows this in principle. The public PTT network is interfaced to a Coastal Earth Station that provides the connection to a satellite via the so-called feeder link. The signal is then frequency converted in the satellite and transmitted to the mobile unit on the service link. It is a two way communication and the forward and return link provides traffic to and from the mobile unit as illustrated in the figure.
