Abstract:

The European Space Agency’s software engineering standards, ESA PSS-05-0 [1] are widely used in the European space industry. Cray Systems have over 600 man-years of experience in applying them in various projects over the last ten years. Since their publication through ESA’s Technology Transfer program as ‘Software Engineering Standards’, they are increasingly being adopted in other sectors. Application of the standards in large projects is quite straightforward. However there are many more small projects than large projects and users of the standards are often raced with the question of how best to apply PSS-05 to a small project. This paper provides some guidelines on how to do this, and should be of interest to anyone developing software using PSS-05 .
