Abstract:
A largely biological environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) has previously been described for Avalon while heat and energy transport and management are added here. The ventilation system transports large amounts of waste heat, absorbed as latent heat during evapotranspiration in the food growing areas and recovered when water vapor is condensed for recycling in air conditioners mounted at the hub. The waste heat is dumped via external radiators. Continuous illumination is convenient for shift working and enables some electricity to be generated internally while avoiding the complications of a varying heat flow and of simulating night-time with mechanical blinds.
