Abstract:

Soviet military intelligence (GRU) was quite pleased with the Zenit-2 ‘s performance. Its early photographs demonstrated ground resolution of approximately 7 meters- better than the 10 meter project requirement. Further modifications of the satellite’s cameras, film and control systems substantially improved the ground resolution. Yet very soon the Soviet military realised one drawback of the Zenit design which could not be easily corrected.
