Abstract:

The Black Knight (BK) ballistic research vehicle arose from a need for an experimental data base to support the design of the re-entry vehicle for the Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM), Blue Streak. As a project, BK began in January 1955 and from BK 08 (May 1960) re-entry phenomena were monitored by American Gaslight ground based instrumentation which evolved into an Anglo/USA/Australian programme called Dazzle. That the follow on programme employing uprated BK vehicles, called Crusade, was cancelled may not be so widely known but Sparta, using US Redstone boosters, continued the work at a later date.
