Abstract:

Historically, telemetry and control (T &C) systems for civilian and military communications satellites have relied on the concept of fixed format Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). It is generally considered that PCM results in a lack of flexibility in response to changing mission requirements and inefficient use of the communications link. The introduction of packet telecommand and telemetry systems allows the concept of demand access by individual data sources into the communications link to be realised. This provides greater system efficiency and an automatic response to varying link bandwidths of traffic loads.
