Abstract:
William Congreve was born on 20 May 1772 possibly at Homerton, Hackney, the eldest son of William Congreve, later Lieutenant General Sir, Colonel Commandant of t11e Royal Artillery and Comptroller of the Royal Arsenal (1780). He received his early education at Hackney School in Kent. From there he went to Trinity College, Cambridge and received his BA in 1793 and an MA in 1795.
