Abstract:

For many years, any Cosmos satellite not fitting into a well-defined class such as reconnaissance, navigation or communications has been classified in the West as a “minor military” satellite. These satellites were initially launched by B-1 (SL-7) launchers, though that vehicle was phased out in 1977 and current examples are launched by C-2 (SL-8) vehicles. Missions suggested for such satellites have included monitoring the upper atmosphere and radiation belts, technology development and radar calibration.
