Crew Health Support on Long-Duration Missions in Microgravity: Some Considerations

Abstract:
The approaches taken to configure space habitats and for defining the measures attending to the health of its crew members deserve a wider discussion. It is argued that current habitat concepts seem still to yield unnecessarily small volumes. And it may again be time to question the conventional wisdom that rejects the use of artificial gravity to address the medical issues that originate from prolonged astronauts exposure to microgravity. Results deriving from ESA’s Safe Haven study are used to explore the crew health support provisions that could be incorporated into future space habitats.
