Abstract:

Sending robotic explorers and sending humans along with their technology are not mutually exclusive options for Mars exploration. The choice among these alternatives is simply a matter of strategic planning and timing. Unmanned robotic precursors will inarguably be required to send back data and return surface samples to Earth. Having sent their machines before them to evaluate surface and atmospheric conditions, humans themselves will go to Mars, if for no other reason than the fact that they are able to do so.
