Abstract:

In 1978 NASA launched the first spaceborne radar on-board the Seasat satellite. The data from Seasat demonstrated the ability of active microwave sensors to provide image information from ocean and land areas. Seasat also demonstrated the ability to obtain high-resolution images through the cloud cover. This is a major advantage compared to remote sensing satellites that collect images in the visible and near-visible range of wave-lengths, and one of the main reasons why users would like to see radar satellites in operational use.
