Abstract:

Many efforts are currently underway to detect extraterrestrial civilisations by using radio telescopes to listen for communication signals. All such searches have been unsuccessful, to date, and the parameters of the problem, in terms of numbers of stars and frequencies to be examined, the required signal strength and the ability to distinguish the communication signals of alien life forms from natural phenomena, all suggest that the level of effort of the search may have to be greatly increased before appreciable probabilities or success may be entertained.
