Abstract:

Norwegian space activities build on the traditions of internationally recognized pioneering work in fields such as cosmic geophysics and satellite communications. Norway became an associate member of ESA in 1981 and a full member in 1987, and space activities have accordingly expanded in scope and depth. Space activities now account for an aggregate annual turnover of about NOK 800 million and employ some 400 persons, which is considerable for a small country. And activities are expanding rapidly. In 1989, the totals of Norwegian space-related goods and services will be significantly greater than domestic consumption, and Norway will be a net exporter. This is one result of an early, long-term involvement in satellite Earth stations and services.
