Abstract:
It is possible that the first human beings to set foot on Mars may reach their goal early next century [1], much research having already been done to demonstrate the feasibility of interplanetary transportation and the construction of Martian bases and settlements [2-7]. However, since the early seventies, a few scientists have episodically turned their thoughts to a possible longer-term goal of settlement, that of terraforming Mars, so that life could thrive within the natural environment. Terraforming is currently experiencing a period of interest and recent papers on the technical [8-12], ethical (13 ,14], and motivational [15] aspects, as well as reviews [10,16], have appeared in a range of journals.
