Abstract:

With the aim of performing space science research in space using spacecraft, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) was established in 1981 as an inter-university institute. It was formed by reorganizing the Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science (the former ISAS) which was an institute attached to the University of Tokyo. The origin of the activities at ISAS can be traced back to rocket research that began in the mid-1950’s within another research institute, the Institute for Industrial Science (IIS), at the University of Tokyo.
