Abstract:

In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the global environment and increasing concern that Man’s activities are starting to affect the sensitive ecological balance of our planet. One of the most crucial of these effects is the increase in the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide concentrations due to the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. This may cause an increase in global temperatures which, accompanied by major shifts in regional weather and vegetation patterns, could lead to a partial melting of the polar ice caps, with many densely populated areas becoming inundated by rising sea levels.
