Abstract:

ERS-1 is a remote-sensing satellite, equipped to observe the Earth with various radar instruments. Some of these have very large antennas and consume huge amounts of power, so the satellite has been equipped with large solar arrays. These components together produce the typical outlook of ERS-1.
