Abstract:
Automata, which were made by 18th century Japanese craftsmen, are preserved in the museum of Edo-Tokyo to remind us of their high ability of design and fabrication developed independently of Western technology. The precise mechanism of these antiques reminds us of Western antique machines of the industrial revolution. Yet, there was no lathe in Japan until the late 19th century when the new imperial government, then keen for modem industry, began development that would allow Japan to catch up to the West.
