Abstract:
The exploration of Mars will provide an excellent opportunity for scientists to expand the art of field data collection and remote analysis to planets other than Earth. Modes of exploration will be different from those practised on Earth because of the extreme environment and mission constraints on equipment operating requirements. For example, the explorers will be operating when temperatures average -55°C, and may plunge to below -100°C during nighttime. Atmospheric pressure will be less than I% of that on Earth, and will be very dry but highly oxidizing. Very advanced equipment must be developed to permit the explorers to achieve maximum scientific advances under difficult restrictions on available time, space, and the total mass of equipment that can be taken.
