Abstract:

Four decades of the exploration and exploitation of space have produced unimagined benefits for man and for mankind, from instant global communications and geolocation to detailed pictures of the dynamic slate of our planet to a deeper understanding of our solar system and the universe. Today, nearly 500 spacecraft in orbit about the Earth, operated by 35 countries and organisations, serve all nations of the world in ways too numerous to elaborate. This technological achievement – perhaps one of the most important steps in the evolution of man has also left a legacy of waste which we are only now beginning to fully comprehend.
