Abstract:

Although Captain Herman Potocnik wrote one of the most important and influential books in the history of spaceflight, the seminal work on space stations, Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums, little has been known about the man himself. Even Willy Ley, in his definitive history of astronautics, could only say that ” the author was an Austrian…who wrote under the name or Hermann Noordung. The title page of his book states that he was a captain of the reserve and a graduate engineer.
