Abstract:

As most nearby stars are at distances of the order of 10 light years or more, a scientific probe to a star needs a speed of about a third of the speed of light to be able to communicate any results back to Earth within a human lifespan, counting from the time the project was started. It is generally assumed that missions foreseen to take longer would not be deployed due to some inherent limitations in the human mind.
