Abstract:

The preparation of hydrazine was first reported in 1887 by Theodor Curtius of the University of Erlangen in Germany who made hydrazine hydrate (N2 H4.Hz0) by the reaction of aqueous alkali on diazoacetic acid esters.

Removal of water from the hydrate proved to be a rather difficult task and it was not until 1894 that de Bruyn first succeeded in isolating the anhydrous material now so widely used as a propellant.
