Abstract:

IN THE PROJECT DAEDALUS starship study the provision of on-board repair facilities, including independently-mobile robot repair vehicles (known as “wardens”), repair bays, and spares and materials, was identified as being essential for mission success. Using present-day reliability and maintainability values from aircraft technology, their likely future improvement factors, and the constraints of the Daedalus mission, a parametric analysis was done. This showed that a full on-board repair capability, duplex redundancy and an order of magnitude improvement in reliability and maintainability were necessary for success.
