Abstract:

June 1961 – Technicians at Cape Canaveral were preparing the Mercury Redstone 8 booster for the mission of Liberty Bell 7 in the coming month. Arriving at the Cape on 8 June, the booster was soon erected on the launch pad and began a long series of tests for the launch. Lift-off came on 21 July, carrying Gus Grissom on a sub-orbital flight and into the history books as the second American and third man in space. Tragically, only some five and a half years later (after making a second flight on Gemini 3) he was lost in the Apollo 1 pad fire. In June 1961, though, Apollo and the Moon still seemed a long, long time away.
