Abstract:

In the 25 years since INTELSAT’s first satellite, Early Bird, was launched, major advances in satellite technology have occurred which have had a dramatic impact on the INTELSAT system and its service offerings. Early Bird (or INTELSAT I) capacity of 240 voice circuits or one TV channel is dwarfed by today’s INTELSAT VI, which can utilize digital circuit multiplication techniques to carry up to 120,000 simultaneous telephone calls and three color television channels. INTELSAT’s expanded use of digital technology has facilitated many new service offerings, allowing INTELSAT to keep pace with with the ever-growing requirements that its worldwide customer base continues to demand.
