Abstract:

Almost all discussions to date on interstellar communication deal with the use of radio signals. The reasons for this emphasis are well documented. The use of interstellar probes, unmanned physical messengers, has also been addressed but to a far lesser extent. It is timely to reconsider again this imbalance of emphasis, for the tools seem to be in hand to initiate programs leading to useful, if primitive, objects.
