Abstract:

In 1960 Frank Drake began the age of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) by examining two stars, Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani, with a single channel receiver. In 1995 he dedicated the Planetary Society’s BETA search at the Harvard Radio Observatory. This search has a capacity of examining nearly a quarter-billion channels simultaneously. According to Drake “for the past 35 years we have averaged doubling our channel capacity every 300 days“. This is a truly astounding progress in signal processing capability.
