Abstract:
Dynamic tension control techniques for tethers and climber technology are the fields that are currently possible to develop while working toward realizing the Space Elevator. JSEA, the Japan Space Elevator Association, has conducted a Space Elevator challenge in Japan since 2009 to provide an actual chance for researchers, engineers and young people to study and enhance their understanding of a Space Elevator related systems. Teams from abroad are also welcomed. Also it offers good chances to spread the basic concepts of the Space Elevator to a larger audience. This paper provides an overview of the competitions and challenges for tethers and climbers in Japan over the years and summarizes the results and lessons learned of each.
