Abstract:
Though the exciting discoveries of Science are often unplanned, in Space Science the opportunity to make discoveries is only made available by deliberately planned space missions; the motivation for wanting the mission may not always be science driven as we have seen during the great US-USSR space race and the Apollo era; science just gets a ride! Significant differences exist between the US and European mission selection and also the funding infrastructure. We will return to compare these two situations in section 3.1, but let us first look at the complement of research activity which was, even if not cast in concrete, at least put into MacDraw in 1985.
