Abstract:
This paper reviews the ionospheric propagation of radio signals at HF (3-30 MHz) on Earth, describes anomalous propagation due to the passage of a satellite through the ionosphere, and summarises research into the ionosphere of Mars. Based on these three grounds, the paper suggests how radio systems for communication and pulse hyperbolic navigation could be used by early settlers and surveyors on Mars. Such systems do not need an artificial satellite communication or navigation system in orbit over Mars.
