Abstract:

October 4, 1997 marked the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Space Age with the launch of Sputnik 1. Another 40th anniversary, six weeks earlier, commemorated an event of perhaps equal significance – the world’s first successful flight of a rocket over an ICBM distance, the R-7, on August 21, 1957. That was 15 months before the US was to equal the accomplishment with Atlas.
